STEVE

STEVE

Steve, a marine, on Presidential detail,
Loves to bike, but skids on the bridge’s grid.
In the post-op room he lies, an invalid
With fractured fingers and shoulder cracked, and greets

Me, “Sister, are you saved? I’m saved, and praise
The lord. ‘Cause once I was a sinner, trashed
My marriage, but Jesus found me wandering, asked
Me to come to him, set my heart ablaze.

You’re saved? Praise God1 Your husband not? Don’t ever
Abandon him now. You have to be Christ for him.
Be faithful! Like now. He tears me limb from limb,
But it’s all for his glory. I praise his name forever!”

I leave my card. next day he seeks me out:
“Thanks for seeing me. What did we talk about?”

(43, August 15, 1992)

My day did volunteer hospital work for many years.
